Embracing Joy

2023 and the pursuit of joy!

This year I have decided to invite more joy into my life. This is not an easy feat considering the innumerable stressors we face each new waking day; However, I believe it is necessary to look for joy in spite of the difficulties we may encounter.

Joy is a choice and we must be determined to seek it out – even in challenging times.

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines joy as, the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.

Joy makes life rich and delightful. It can make all the difference when we encounter trouble.

Even in the midst of suffering joy can be found in the shadows and can bring light to a dark situation. Joy is all about perspective.

So, what about you? Will you join me on this journey to create and pursue joy filled moments in 2023?

Joy is possible to achieve but we must be aware of the barriers that try to destroy it. For example, anxiety, stress and unhealthy thinking patterns work hard to rob us of our joy.

Using healthy coping mechanisms (i.e. mindfulness meditation, healthy boundaries, practice of gratitude, prayer) will help neutralize the effects of anxiety and negative thought patterns.

Second, anger, bitterness and strife are barriers to joy. Many of us have endured unspeakable hurt and pain and we can’t imagine letting ‘it’ go because the pain inflicted upon us in the past continues to show up today.

Believe me, I have been there. I know that letting go of the past is not easy to do; However, it became necessary for me to let go of the pain in order to live a joy filled life.

Bitterness takes a toll while joy is a choice. Which will you chose today?

Finally, loneliness is another barrier to joy. Loneliness is an emotional state of mind that leaves people feeling isolated and disconnected from others. It occurs when we’re unable to form true connections with others around us.

Loneliness can have serious implications on one’s mental, emotional and physical wellness. Mitigating the negative effects of loneliness will help you embrace and invite more joy into your life.

Of course, there are other extenuating factors that deplete joy including not living out your life’s purpose or suffering from chronic illness and pain.

In spite of the challenges, you might be facing right now, will you seek out moments of joy in your life?
